This is the end result of irresponsible pet ownership. Got a call yesterday from someone who said they found a hurt chinchilla. Since they did not say where they were located, I said to call the local City Animal Shelter who will take the chin, diagnose and decide if it they will care for it or call a chin rescue to take it. Turns out it was SJ who ended up calling us. Their vet (no exotic Vet available) took xrays which showed no broken bones but the chin did not seem able to use its hind legs and that was all they could do for it. They brought the chin yesterday evening and yes, while she seemed spunky she could not use her back legs and would just fall over. I could see/feel and the SJ folks mentioned that the fur on her back seemed roughed up and had saliva in it. Placed her in a cage next to food and water overnight. In the morning she was still in the same place/position. She did not move all night and did not seem to eat anything either. Took he into Adobe today and Dr Nyugen (Chin Vet) looked her over and confirm that she was now a paraplegic with permanent loss of her back half. It was decided that a paraplegic chin has no life and she was put to sleep. Estimated 2.5yrs of age is too young to have to put down a chin that either escaped from someone while they were playing with a chin outside, or released because they did not want the chin anymore. However the chin ended up outside, the result is the same - dead chin. Pet Chinchillas do not survive outdoors and should never be outside unless in a proper carrier so they cannot/do not escape because this is the unhappy result 90% of time either by a predator (as in this case) or heat.
