Senior Equine
This is a feed we use for sick chins and other chins who need “building up”. Some of our chinchillas with chronic tooth problems also get this feed as it is softer. It is also high in calories and is used as a feed for elderly horses. Likewise, our more elderly chins get this as well. This feed spoils easily and should be kept refrigerated. It can also get worms and other larvae, so freeze most of it if you purchase it in large amounts.
Omolene
This is a molasses and grain mixture also given to horses. It should be used sparingly with chinchillas, only for those who are sick or in need of extra calories and roughage. It is a mixture of oats, grains and molasses. It too is easily contaminated by larvae and should be refrigerated or frozen if purchased in large amounts.
Alpha Classic
Another horse feed that can be used to “bulk up” a small or sick chinchilla. This is not good as a sole feed for chinchillas but can be used in much the same way that horse owners use it:
“Stage 1” – for foals and weanlings (infant or very young chinchillas)
“Stage 2” – for growing horses (growing chinchillas)
“Stage 3” – for gestating mares (pregnant chinchillas)
This can be obtained via mail from the Manna Pro Company. (see Supplies and Vendors)
